I think I'm going to do it.

Because I've gotten to the point where I go to work and just... don't really enjoy it anymore. I have moments I enjoy, but overall it feels more like a chore then something I enjoy. I'm sick of dealing with the politics and my mother being up in my business, and all that. ( I took yesterday off sick. She yelled at me when she got home ). I've sort of gotten over the diapers, and the lack of supplies, and the ... you know, just the everything.

My older brother just graduated college. Total cost : at least 100 thou that my dad contributed over 4-5 years.

The amount my father pays in child support ( and doesn't have to pay in child support any more, because we're all over 18 and I'm the only one living at home ) is over TWICE what I make at work.

Let me try that number again. Over double.

Which means that my father simply paying what he was paying in child support directly to me is me getting paid double to NOT work.

And makes me feel quite a bit less guilty about the whole thing.

So I think I shall call my father tomorrow and figure out details and whatnot and see if this is what I really truly want to do and so forth. And if it is, and does, and so on, I think I might quite my job in the fall.

And the fact that I look forward to that is probably a sign as well.

This morning, while I was going through a couple of weeks of mail, Katie took the fresh new pack of Crayola washable crayons and colored on the carpet. On. The. Carpet.

It's like she's got a checklist of all evil crayon-related activities and is trying to get through them as quickly as possible. I was sitting 3 feet away from her.  (The coloring of the walls was done while Tom was supposed to be watching the girls and I was cooking dinner.)  We're on an art-material ban for a while.

A couple of hours later, I took the girls to the grocery store so I could pick up a few things for a BBQ we are attending tomorrow. All of the sudden, Katie takes off running at full speed. She refuses to listen to my polite requests to stop. Then my less polite requests for her to stop. Then it turns into me running after her with my cart and Amelia chasing along behind me and the cart. I know this was great fun for her.

I'm so glad Tom's getting off of work early today.  They are his kids when he comes home.

Did someone else (perhaps Israel or Iran) bring up the topic of Israel bombing Iran, or did the Bush administration just start talking about the topic by denying that they wanted it to happen?  I wouldn't put it past them.

What would your reaction be if a coworker said, out of nowhere, "I really don't think Joe should sucker-punch you as you come out of the meeting"?  You'd start to think that maybe Joe was up to something, wouldn't you?

Reminds me of Wag the Dog.
Conrad 'Connie' Brean: And it's most certainly NOT about the B-3 bomber.
John Levy: There is no B-3 bomber.
Conrad 'Connie' Brean: I just said that! There is no B-3 bomber. I don't know how these rumors get started!

In related news:

I deny that I want gorgeous women to start coming up to me and kissing me without warning.  It would threaten to destabilize my whole region.

Maybe it's a sign.

The mom of the boys I babysit for called me tonight about babysitting this Saturday, and during our conversation we were talking about me possibly babysitting for them in November for three days while the rents are out of town. I've babysat overnight for the boys before, so it's not like it's a big deal, and they're sweet kids and all. It's just not set in stone yet, and I wanted to make sure it wasn't the same weekend as KWAR, because I'd like to go to KWAR.

And on a tangent from that, we were talking about how Eddie ( the older boy, who is starting kindergarten in the fall ) is going to a new aftercare place and how she was half tempted to just hire me to pick them up from school ( 2:30 ) and watch them until she got back at 5:30.

Don't know how serious she was, but I imagine if I said yes she'd jump the chance.

And they're sweet kids. And the mom is cool. And in my mind, I just imagine getting paid as much / more to watch two kids as I do to watch 6-8 kids. And deal with a single set of parents instead of 6-8 sets of parents. And not have to deal with incident reports, and politics, and god knows what the hell else.

A kid at work today told another kid to ' kill her '  ( me ) when I took one of his toys away.

And then my father offered to pay for my college and expenses ( which would probably come out to more then I currently make at work -- I make 9$/hr at a company I've been working for for 6 years. )  next term, so I could go to school full time and just belt it out and get it over with. And because he thinks I'm wasting my life at my job. Which I probably am.

I have been working since I was 16. The day I got a car was the day I got a job. My brother got a car and didn't get a job, and mom continued paying his allowance and paid his gas and all.

I think my mother has paid for a tank of gas for me.... never. Well no, I've probably used the emergency credit card a half dozen times or so.

I'm getting to the point where I hate my job. I don't know if my pride is at a point where I can stop working and stop paying my own way.

My brother did it. My mum and dad paid his entire way through college, which he just graduated from like, two days ago. My brother was U of Maryland, which ... I don't know how much is costs. Probably at least 20 a year.

My brother has at least one job offer on the table, to work in NYC, for just over 80,000 a year.

I go to VCC. It costs maybe 2-3 a year. With books. And lab fees. And a class in the summer.

I dunno. The only problem with having such a large family is looking at them and realizing how much you don't want to be them.

The crayoning, day two: I followed up with a solid five minute scrub with a Target-brand Magic Eraser. The eraser dissolved, the crayon came up, and so did some of the paint. The wall will need some paint touch up, but it looks much better. I shudder to think of the fumes that have been released in that area in the last twenty-four hours, but such is the wrath of Katie. :)
---
I just placed an order for a gDiapers starter system for Katie. There's a sale on Amazon, and Tom and I have seen friends use them. I've been wanting to use a more ecologically friendly diapering system for years, but we've had internal disagreements about cloth diapering. This is a very good compromise, and hopefully it will work out for us.  We can get refills locally at Whole Foods/Harry's which will be convenient until we potty train Katie, which will hopefully be sooner than later!

I wanted to give you a quick update of where I am and how I'm doing. But first I have to thank all of you more than I will ever be able to express. When I get back online (and I actually might by the end of the week! At least dial up) I'll be more specific and effusive, but in the short form this entire thing has been life changing in a good way. A really, really, really good way. And when I'm through it, I will be better and there will be so damn much music you won't have time to listen to it all!

I love every single one of you and you are all getting hugged like crazy when we meet up again!

OK. I'm at a nursing and rehab facility in Dearborn Heights called Imperial House. It ain't the Ritz, but the people are nice and, at least for now, I have a window. Yesterday was the first day of real rehab. They lugged me into a chair and wheeled me down to the rehab room with lots of actual exercise equipment... and a car! (many people who come in for rehab drove before their accident, and this is to help them with getting in and out)  I did about 10 minutes hard work on an arm bicycle, at which point I was exhausted, but it felt great. And just sitting up was nice, too.

The leg is doing fine, although we haven't done anything with it, really, since I got here. The biggest impediment right now is the urethral surgery and the catheter therefrom. Whenever they try to move me, the first thing they do is carefully remove the tape which has been holding the tube to my belly to keep it from moving. Instantaneous internal joy. It doesn't seem to occur to them that it might be taped there for a reason. The cath is supposed to come out next monday, and I honestly don't know if I'll make it that long. Drugs help. Valium is our friend!

Anyway, thta's where things are right now. I need to find out more about how the rehab is supposed to go. The scheduleing is still really vague. All I've got is "can't put any wieght on left leg until September 9th". On the other hand, I've lost at least 30 pounds. My feet are no longer swollen. I can has ankle bones!

Again, I love you all, and I'll get online a quickly as I can. I have to single out a few people for really incredible stuff behind the scenes. First and foremost, Leslie. [ed. aw shucks!]. Anne. Rob Balder - Ohhhh, Rob! Mark Bernstein. Sharon Brevoort.Uncle Kage. Merav Hoffman. Christine Lavin. Bill Holbrook. Sandy Schreiber. Steve Jackson. David Stockton, Andrew Smirl. Joey Shoji. Tom Rockwell. Possible Oscar. Basically all of you in general, and everyone at DuckCon, Contata, AnthroCon, and the Tom Smith cover project in particular.

You guys are getting at least three fuckin' operas out of this.

Love, Tom

I'll be damned... Jul. 1st, 2008 @ 08:56 am

Epictetus - Golden Sayings Jul. 1st, 2008 @ 01:38 am
[info]caligatia
I have no idea why this was on my to-read list.  But I read it, and was pretty much annoyed throughout.  It was too religious for my tastes.

I just looked up Epictetus.  Now I know why I wanted to read him.  He was a Stoic philosopher who heavily influenced Marcus Aurelius (who quotes him in the Meditations).

I haven't read the full Dialogues, so I don't know if the Golden Sayings were chosen for their religious content.  But just reading the shorter work, every answer to any presented philosophy question has to do with God.

I should go to bed...

Giordano Bruno was amazing. Jun. 30th, 2008 @ 07:59 pm
[info]caligatia
I just finished reading his On the Infinite Universe and Worlds, and wow was he ahead of his time.  Bruno was burned at the stake as a heretic in the year 1600 for holding these beliefs.  They were so out there for the time that I can understand why the Church wanted him dead.

Let's take a look at some of Bruno's ideas.

-- The universe is infinite and is full of countless worlds with many suns.

-- Space is full of matter.

-- Astrology is bullshit.

-- The traditional "ladder of nature" (which placed humans at the top of the heap) "is but a charming dream, an old wives' tale."  (You starting to see why the Church hated him?)

-- All inhabitants of other worlds, including animals, are equal to the inhabitants of Earth.

-- Aristotle was wrong about the natural world.  (Artistotle was beloved of Church philosophers, and to argue against him was tremendous for the time.)

-- Water is the unifying element on Earth.

Bruno wrote a lot about gravity, although he didn't have the word yet.  Here's some things he said on the subject:

-- It exists on other planets.

-- It causes planets to move in similar patterns to Earth's.

-- It keeps things from flying off one world and crashing into another.

And this all was in the late 1500's!  Wasn't Bruno awesome?  I just checked Wikipedia to see if I was remembering correctly about him being burned at the stake, and the page on Bruno says that some condsider him to be the first martyr for science.  I can see that.

If you're interested at all in the history of science, you should read Bruno.  He really was amazing.

-----

ETA 12:04am -- a friend just told me that Bruno was a crackpot and claimed that his theories had been "revealed" to him. Sigh. I was very disappointed to hear that his ideas weren't the result of rational thought... :(

Fail! Jun. 30th, 2008 @ 06:55 pm

Rain + water based paint = fail.
A handyman who purchased paint at the Benjamin Moore Paint Dealer I work at is upset because the elastomeric waterproof coating we sold him failed to work properly and is demanding that we reimburse him for the product cost plus lost wages. The product failed to adhere properly to the stuccoed surface and washed off. Why did the paint fail? He applied it this afternoon in the RAIN. It rained steadily today in Tally from 10am until 3pm. According to him, that's no excuse as it says on the label in bold black print "WATERPROOF COATING". This same product is water based and cleans up with soap and water. I'm not making this up. What an idiot! My response would have been "Sorry sir, the product failed not due to water but rain. It's not rain proof, just waterproof":)

Thoughts on Aurelius Jun. 30th, 2008 @ 05:43 pm
[info]caligatia
So I'm reading Marcus Aurelius's Meditations.  It was one of the books discussed in Jennifer Michael Hecht's Doubt, a History (which I read some time ago and loved).  I got a bunch of ideas for stuff to read from that book, and I just downloaded a few volumes from Project Gutenberg and put them on my Palm.

So far I've read the first two books of the Meditations and I find the given advice interesting to contemplate.  Aurelius was a Stoic, and he spends a lot of time talking about how one should restrain one's baser passions and trust Reason instead.  Which is pretty good advice.  But I'm wondering if the Stoics -- or at least Aurelius -- went too far in repressing their desires.  I mean, at one point in the first book he thanks a friend who helped "cure" him the times he fell in love.  Denying love seems a bit much, given that love -- pair bonding -- is what keeps the race propagating itself.  Or maybe the Stoics weren't against love, but rather against letting love consume one and overcome Reason.  I don't know enough about Stoic philosophy to say yet.

I'm enjoying reading this, although I may hit up the library for a more recent translation.  The one I'm reading uses thy and thou and whilst and other annoyingly faux-archaic language.  Nothing translated in the twentieth century should be that pompous.  Some of these sentences take me several minutes to puzzle out because the transation is so wonky.  Yeah, I think I'll hit up the library for this one.

I get upset with Apple Jun. 30th, 2008 @ 05:34 pm
[info]bimble
Yes, I love Macs. But Apple has always been a love-hate kind of thing. As a company they do some absolutely brilliant things, and they do some incredibly stupid things. I would like to rant about a stupid thing.

As some may know, my desktop Mac (a Powermac G5, dual 2.5 GHz processors) died a while back. The power supply went kaput. It wasn't something I was likely to replace myself (I looked at it, it's no standard computer power supply), I'd have to at least get the part through an Apple service center, and given how tightly they designed the case, it would probably be worth it to pay them to do the installation too.

"No problem," I thought, "I'll take it in when I can afford it, since I still have my laptop, and I can game on my PC." Well, recently I decided that time had come.

Difficulty the first: I loaded the desktop into the car and headed to the nearest Apple store. Of course, when I say "desktop" I mean "tower that weighs approximately 50 pounds, I am not exaggerating, that's what this bitch weighs." I am not a fit person, so lugging that thing around in 90 degree weather is no picnic. One might imagine my distress, then, after lugging it through a crowded mall parking lot into the Apple Store, when told that no, they can't do anything with the machine that day because I failed to make an appointment.

That's right. To bring an old machine in for service these days you need to make an appointment or no one at the "Genius Bar" will have time for you. Even if it's a matter of knowing exactly what the problem is and expecting they'll have to order the part anyway. They wouldn't hold the machine for me overnight either, that would be against policy. Only recourse, make an appointment for the next day, and carry the machine back to the car. The last time I'd gone to an Apple Store for service was four years ago, but back then you could just get on a waiting list. Dammit.

(To give an idea of how unfit I am, how hot it is, and how annoyed I was, I stopped to give blood a couple hours later and my diastolic was high and my pulse rate was in the 90s. And to give an idea of what a really crappy day that was, I'll also mention that at said visit, which was forced upon me because my mother wanted the $10 Wal-Mart gift card that came with the donation, the jerk phlebotomist [hey, Firefox on Windows doesn't know the word phlebotomist!] missed my vein on the first try, tried to fix it, wound up bruising me, and apparently screwed it up so badly I started to go into shock after a few minutes, feeling nauseous and shaky. At least I got that damned gift card, even if they didn't manage to draw enough blood. And yes, I've donated frequently with no problems, so that guy was pretty darned bad.)

Difficulty the second: The next day I returned to the Apple Store, computer in tow. Once more I staggered in with my shiny titanium albatross around my neck, but this time with an appointment. One employee who saw me come in asked if I had an appointment, and when I proudly said yes, he asked for my name and said he would check me in. After I got to the back and turned around, I saw that the fellow in question had instead wandered over to play with an iPod and chat with another employee. I flagged someone else down and had her check me in instead. Checking me in put me on a waiting list.

While I waited I listened to a hapless "Genius" (that's what they call the tech guys there) try to instruct a woman who apparently had an appointment before me in how to actually use a computer. I guess that explains the need to make an appointment, if the same guys who see you for service are also there to spend an hour giving introductory computer use lessons. Meanwhile another store employee, whose apparent purpose was overseeing the crowd by the "Genius Bar" to make sure we didn't get too rowdy, confessed to someone that she wasn't really sure how to use her iPod touch, she just poked things on the screen until it finally got to what she wanted to play.

At last, my turn in the queue came up, and I lugged my machine on over to a portly gentleman in an Apple t-shirt. I explained the issue to him, and he checked to make sure that the problem still existed (I do not begrudge him the test, but if it had suddenly turned on when he tried it I would have snapped and killed everyone there using only an iPod Shuffle armband). Then he cracked open the case to look inside, and looked nervous. "Um, I'll be right back," he said, then scurried behind a door labeled "Employees Only". He returned a couple minutes later with another employee in tow (I swear there were as many employees as there were customers, and that was a crowded store), and they peered into the case and conferred. At last the other employee shook his head and disappeared behind the door again. The original "Genius" turned to me and said, "We can't service this."

You see, my friends (and my not-friends, I don't want to make too many assumptions about you), I have an addition to my Powermac G5 case: The Wiebetech G5 Jam. This is an aluminum air baffle that replaces Apple's original plastic baffle, providing mounting space for additional hard drives as well as improved heat sinking ability to allow for said hard drives. The G5 Jam won a "Best of Show" award at the January 2004 MacWorld Expo, so it wasn't exactly an unknown product when I bought it later that year.

One might imagine my surprise, then, when the "Genius" explained that the replacement baffle and the two hard drives attached to it disrupted the air flow in the case, causing the power supply in my machine to overheat. Therefore they could not service the Powermac because they couldn't guarantee the same thing wouldn't happen again.

Three points are now relevant: Point the first, this machine is not remotely in warranty. I bought this machine in 2004, so of course it's not in warranty. I wasn't looking for warranty repair, I was looking for a replacement part for one that was decidedly non-functional. Point the second: I bought the G5 Jam in 2004 as well. For nearly four years the Powermac G5 has operated with that baffle and those hard drives without any problem. So I am comfortable with the risk inherent in replacing the power supply under the machine's current conditions.

Most important is point the third: The baffle is easily removable. Really, it nestles in the machine right behind the case door. You just pull it out, no tools necessary. Unplug the hard drives attached to it, and magically the machine becomes G5 Jam-less. It's easy! It does not take a genius to work this out.

Alas, this "Genius" did not see things my way. They could not service the machine because I had had the audacity to alter the airflow in the machine, once upon a time, so I could not pay them to get a new part and replace it. He offered me a card for someone who does Apple service independently. "He used to be a Genius here." At that point I asked him to stop using the word "Genius" to refer to the store's employees. He looked hurt.

And so, there it stands. After going to great lengths to offer Apple money to repair my machine, they refused because they'd been baffled by my baffle. And I will be damned if I will let this pass quietly. I have been using Macs for twenty-four years now. It is my platform. I have supported the platform through some bad times, I have supported their users, and I have encouraged people to buy from them. Over the years I have converted dozens of people, and I am not about to let these filthy iPod-pushers make me regret doing so. I do not think this new breed of headphone-wearing bobbleheads knows what it means to wake the ire of an old-school Mac Evangelist, but they will know.

I took action. I called customer service.

I now await a call from the store manager. The customer service rep assured me that he will call. If he does not call, he will be found.

Oh yes! Tremble in fear at my roused wrath!

Holy shit does Heath Ledger come across as creepy in TDK trailers.  I mean, his Joker comes across as somebody I'd be scared to death of in real life.  Too many times the Joker comes across as cartoony and unrealistic.  Ledger's Joker seems believable and thus very, very disturbing.

I can't wait until the movie comes out.  I'm also really looking forward to Hellboy II.  July seems like a good month for movies.

Orlando vacation/Arcade gaming Jun. 29th, 2008 @ 07:53 pm
[info]maximoff
It's a strange thing, I've been living in Orlando for the past few years, however I never really connect it with the place I used to go on family vacations when I was a kid. When Fenix was here a few months ago, I noted that there seem to be two Orlandos. The normal Orlando and tourist Orlando. I didn't know much about tourist Orlando.

Today, on a whim I decded to go for a Sunday drive around International Drive (which for some reason stops and starts across several streets) and just look through a bunch of places. I was looking at the cheap tourist traps, and souvenir stores.

One ulterior reason was that I did this, was because I was looking for a good arcade. From almost every family vacation I took back in the day, I always seemed to encounter an arcade. Also when I first moved here, I went on a search for them. They seemed to dissapear. I recently read two webpages which got me on this track of thinking.

This link is a listing of arcade locations around the country. Although a bit outdated, it is none the less an interesting read. Apparently there is a lot of drama around Rocky's arcade (which IMO has a good selection of games, but a horrible atmosphere with too much damn smoke in the building)

This link on the "Shoryuken" message boards for Street Fighter is an interesting discussion on whether the release of Street Fighter 4 can revive arcades. The majority opinion seems to say that it won't.

I've found it strange that for all the remakes of old games and the retrogaming becoming a trendy thing (I've seen many shirts for old Nintendo games and bought a Pacman shirt), that the original thing is almost nowhere to be seen.

However it is understandable. Arcade games used to always have two advantages from home games. They had better graphics and you could easily play against other people. Nowadays those two points are seemingly moot. The first one I understand, but I don't like the second one. There was always a social aspect of going to an arcade, getting out of the house. Nowadays, it seems that online gaming on the next generation consoles is replacing that, but there are probably a lot of people who may not want to make a $400-$500 investment on a video game. At least with arcades all you needed was 1 or 2 quarters.

Back in the mid 90's the fighting game craze based on people against each other was great for the arcade scene. However it seems to have faded away, although there are still diehard fans out there (although some say the diehards are the reason that new people can't get into fighting games anymore).

No real point to this post, I'm just nostalgic for arcades. :)

Dear Lazywebs: Is there a way to get MS Word 2004 (Mac) to add Unicode words to a custom dictionary? Jun. 28th, 2008 @ 05:16 pm

I'm helping [info]turtlebat23 edit a term paper, and when I tried to add συνεργούς to the custom dictionary, Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac [Version 11.5.0 (080429)] complained that it couldn't save it to the custom dictionary because it contained Unicode.

Is there some add-on or patch that would solve this, or will we just have to choose between "Ignore All" on every document or buying Word 2008?

...and now back to the editing.

... you'd better be able to pay a tech when the slightest thing goes wrong. A few months back I completely disassembled my Dell, swapped motherboard, memory, and optical drive, and reassembled it in about two hours. No, nothing was broken, I was swapping in upgrades cannibalized from another system. I just spent four hours replacing the cooling fan on my wife's MacBook and reassembling it. Thats four hours with it already disassembled. there are literally at least ten different types of fasteners, as opposed to two on the Dell. I have never, *ever*, seen such a poorly designed chassis.

But Steve wears a cool turtleneck with his jeans and loafers, so he must be hip. That means his systems have to be well designed, doesn't it? One button really is better than two, right?

Okay, that's it. Jun. 27th, 2008 @ 04:10 pm

Apparently, I'm going to have to wash my car in order to get some rain at my house.

It's raining inside the perimeter like mad, but rain here north of the city? No, sirree!
